Four-Star Hotel in Ioannina
The three-storey, four-star Essence Hotel, located in the “Nea Zoi” area of Ioannina, fully meets its needs for heating, cooling, and domestic hot water production through an integrated geothermal system combined with AERMEC fan coil units.
The primary objective of the project’s design and engineering was the minimization of the installation’s energy footprint and the achievement of Energy Class A in accordance with national energy performance regulations (KENAK). To this end, an open-loop geothermal solution was selected, incorporating two boreholes, one for water supply and one for discharge, ensuring stable and highly efficient system operation.
In parallel, an underground buffer tank for temporary storage of the supply water was designed and constructed, optimizing the hydraulic and thermal performance of the geothermal loop. The installation was further enhanced with external plate heat exchangers featuring local cleaning capability, ensuring increased reliability and long-term operational efficiency.
To cover the hotel’s heating and cooling loads, two AERMEC WRL geothermal heat pumps were installed, with a total installed capacity of 90 kW. The overall system design is based on a four-pipe configuration, allowing the simultaneous selection of heating and cooling in different zones of the building and providing flexible, precise thermal comfort control throughout the guest areas.
Domestic hot water production was designed to fully cover the hotel’s needs through a dedicated WRL geothermal heat pump combined with solar thermal systems, without the use of any auxiliary conventional energy source. This approach further reinforces the project’s identity as an energy-efficient and environmentally responsible installation.
The Essence Hotel project stands as a representative example of the application of advanced geothermal solutions in contemporary hospitality developments, successfully combining high energy efficiency, sustainability, and elevated comfort standards for building users.
